The new primary school on Pear Parade has opened for Term 1 2026.
The school has officially opened in Term 1 of 2026, providing modern educational facilities for the rapidly growing communities in Melbourne’s north-west. It caters for students from Prep to Year 6 and has capacity for around 525 students, helping meet increasing enrolment demand in the Fraser Rise and Plumpton areas.
The school’s name, Wiyal (pronounced “wee-yil”), comes from the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung language and means “peppermint tree.” The name was chosen through consultation with Traditional Owners and the local community, reflecting a connection to culture and the environment.
Wiyal Primary School features state-of-the-art facilities, including modern learning neighbourhoods, a library and administration building, outdoor sports courts, a sports field, and a community hub with an indoor multi-use court, performing arts spaces, and a canteen. These facilities support collaborative learning and a strong community environment.
A key upcoming development is the construction of an on-site kindergarten, expected to open around 2028. The kindergarten will include three rooms and will help create a smoother transition from early childhood education into primary school.
Wiyal Primary School represents a significant investment in education infrastructure, supporting families in the rapidly expanding Fraser Rise community.
